The New York Times dance review (5/14/08) by Claudia La Rocco on Michael Shannon’s newest contemporary ballets this season, WHAT’S THE POINTE, YUMEJI, and TCHAICOTIC, explained “ballet insiders complain their art form is misunderstood as prissy and old-fashioned when, really, it is all about sexy, young things, and sensual feats, a fact underlined” in Shannon’s choreography. Shannon has “no tutu-clad, pedestal enshrined ballerinas,” proving “there is more than one way to objectify a dancer in toe shoes.” Shannon’s works, she says, are “provocative, cultivating the naughty, black bandeau bikinis, matching bobbed wigs, stabbing footwork illuminating the musics rhythms and sublime cello suites. Imagine,” she says, “if the Wilis (in the ballet, “Giselle”) were bored, straddling, stroking, and manipulating their partners, i.e., suburban teenagers who emasculated men instead of dancing them to death.”
The Buffalo News dance review (5/5/08) by Steve Sucato, described Michael Shannon’s WHAT’S THE POINTE in eight movements as a “sensual and slick ballet with a lead-with-the-hips style a la Rhoden, and scantily clad dancers in black wigs and pointe shoes turned on their feminine wiles in alluring choreography, and the work’s eight movements were a satisfying blend of intimate partnering and ‘watch me strut’ dancing. Shannon’s TCHAICOTIC set to Tchaikovsky reminds one of Mats Ek and Jiri Kylian, not surprising since Shannon worked in Europe. Overall his work is captivating and a nice addition to a varied and solid dance program.”
Configuration Dance Theatre has premiered eleven contemporary works by Michael Shannon since 2005. The Buffalo News has described the creative partnership between Artistic Director Joseph Cipolla and Shannon, “The Dream Team.” The New York Times says their “innate classicism is the first great pleasure, and the exciting contemporary thrust to their repertory.” Dance Magazine described their repertoire and dancers as “a living art gallery.” Their commitment to excellence has resulted in the Artists of Configuration Dance Theatre receiving the ARTVOICE Best Dance Company Award in 2008 and 2009, and a YAGP Outstanding Choreographers Award to Shannon in 2008.

READ BELOW FOR UPDATED OPINION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After seeing the BET Awards a SECOND time, I realised I made a huge mistake in being so nice to the show. Some people are saying it’s unrealistic to think you can do a 180 change to an awards show in such LITTLE TIME…
But listen, 3 days is AMPLE time to give a tribute to MICHAEL JACKSON……There is no other artist in this WORLD more deserving of a tribute show..
And there was so much BLACK STAR POWER in that building that would have been willing to get they ES out the audience and get on the STAGE and perform for the man they claim to Idolize….
BET should have said LISTEN OJAYS … we got to do this some OTHER time. Beacase the KING has died. Unless yall doin a MJ song, yall gonna have to come back NEXT YEAR….
When he died….. TV and radio said HOLD UPPP .. Michael Jackson has died…. Forget PREVIOUSLY SCHEDULED SHOWS we got to pay our respects to Michael…. I witnessed it myself on 106 and park !!!! SO it should have been done for the awards……
Yall shoulda called up CHRIS BREEZY…. This could have been his BIG COME BACK!!!!!…. yall screwed up ..You shoulda got Lil Mama an dat hair on the LINE an ask her to call her Jabba Walkies an all them dances who did the Michael Jackson tribute on AMERICAS BEST DANCE CREW an get them on stage… Ciara was OKAY but she should hav dropped the mic an Start DANCING….. Call R. Kelly, Get Lloyd!!! You could have called NSYNC you boring s….
And yall bleeped out alot from the show in the Encore. in my opinion, the WHOLE SHOW needs to be bleeped out. UGHH…. Yall cut out that Rhames guy, Deleted the part when the old lady was takin a when she was sposed to be on stage, cut out the Little girls on stage with Lil Wayne an Drake. Jackson and Teddy Riley created the track in time for the 1991 release of Dangerous. However, it did not appear on that record and was minimally altered before commercial release in 1997. The song is about a predatory woman by the name of Susie, who seduces Jackson before plotting to stab him with a knife. The composition explores a variety of genres ranging from rock to funk.
Commentators compared “Blood on the Dance Floor” to music from Dangerous. Others commented on the songs perceived aggressive tone and the vocal style, the broad genres heard and possible lyrical interpretations of the song. Reviews at the time of release were largely mixed, but contemporary reviews have been favorable.
The song was promoted with a music video that premiered on Top of the Pops. It centered around Susie seducing Jackson in a courtship dance, before opening a switchblade. “Blood on the Dance Floor” was the only track from the remix album performed on the HIStory World Tour. The lead single peaked at number one in several countries, including the UK.
